How to choose a wedding venue in Mumbai: a 12-point checklist

Guest count, parking, power back-up, in-house catering and more: the questions to ask before you book a wedding venue in Mumbai.

How to choose a wedding venue in Mumbai: a 12-point checklist

Booking the venue is the first big decision of any Mumbai wedding, and it shapes almost everything after it: the date, the guest list, the décor budget and how your family moves between functions. Before you sign, walk through these twelve questions.

1. How many guests will actually attend?

Ask for both numbers: seated capacity for a sit-down dinner and floating capacity for a reception where people move around. A hall that seats 800 can comfortably hold far more guests at a standing reception. At Golden Leaf Banquet in Malad West, for example, the 12,000 sq ft ballroom seats up to 800 and holds up to 1,500 at full capacity.

2. Indoor, outdoor or both?

An open lawn is magical for a sangeet or reception, but Mumbai weather decides a lot. For monsoon dates, plan an air-conditioned hall or a weatherproof structure as back-up. Our guide on choosing between a lawn and a banquet hall covers this in detail.

3. Can one venue host every function?

Haldi, mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception across one or two connected spaces saves your family hours of travel. Look for venues with more than one hall, or a hall plus a terrace or lawn.

4. Who does the catering?

Some venues have an in-house kitchen; others work with a panel of caterers. In-house catering usually means one quote and one point of contact. Ask how many cuisines they cover, whether live counters are included and whether Jain food is prepared separately.

5. Can you bring your own decorator?

Check the décor policy early. If the venue has an exclusive decorator, ask to see their past work at that exact hall, so you know how the room photographs when dressed.

6. Parking and arrival

Ask about valet parking, the drop-off point for the bride and groom, and how guests reach the hall from the nearest station. In the western suburbs, a venue a short drive from Malad, Kandivali or Andheri station makes life easier for guests coming by train.

7. Power back-up and sound limits

Confirm generator back-up for lighting and air-conditioning, and any time limits on music, especially for outdoor functions.

8. Rooms for family

For out-of-town guests, rooms on or near the venue are a huge help. KRC Lawn & Banquet in Kandivali West, for instance, has guest rooms on the same campus as the lawn and the hall.

9. What exactly is in the quote?

Ask for a line-by-line quote covering hall rental, décor, menu per plate, taxes, service staff, and any charges for extra hours or set-up time.

10. Dates and holds

Peak wedding dates go months in advance. Ask how long the venue can hold a date while your family decides, and what the advance payment is.

11. Who manages the day?

A dedicated coordinator who knows the hall, the kitchen and the décor team will keep timings on track so your family can be guests.

12. See it dressed

Finally, visit when the hall is set for an event. A bare room tells you very little about how your wedding will look.
